Surfing in Noosa
A globally recognised surfing destination
Noosa is home to one of the world’s most iconic longboard waves and is internationally celebrated for its clean water, natural beauty and relaxed surf culture.
In 2020, Noosa was officially designated a World Surfing Reserve, recognising the area’s outstanding environmental, cultural and economic value.
The Reserve protects more than just waves, it safeguards the unique coastal character, biodiversity and community spirit that make Noosa’s surf breaks so special.
It also encourages locals and visitors to help care for the coastline and uphold the values that define our surfing community.
The Noosa World Surfing Reserve works with Council, community groups and local surfers to protect the coastline and promote responsible surf culture. Its goals include:
- Preserving and protecting the natural integrity of Noosa’s surf breaks
- Supporting sustainable coastal management and environmental protection
- Community collaboration and advocacy for the coastline
- Celebrating Noosa’s surf culture and heritage
- Surf safety education and community respect
- Studying and highlighting the economic value of the surf breaks within the Noosa World Surfing Reserve
The Reserve’s stewardship program brings together surfers, Traditional Owners, environmental groups and local businesses to ensure Noosa’s waves remain world‑class for generations to come.

Caring for Noosa’s surfing future
Everyone who surfs here plays a part in protecting Noosa’s coastal environment and surf culture. By following surf etiquette, respecting other water users and supporting the values of the World Surfing Reserve to share, respect and preserve, you help ensure Noosa remains a safe, enjoyable and sustainable place to surf.
In early 2027, Council will commence a community-wide engagement process with surfers, stakeholders and interested groups to develop a Surf Management Plan that helps guide the future management of Noosa's world-renowned surf breaks.
