Fire Ants

Fire Ants 2.png

Fire ants pose a serious threat to our lifestyle, public safety, environment and economy.  They can inflict painful stings and have the potential to restrict everyday activities such as barbeques, picnics and sporting events.

A recent infestation was found not far from the Noosa Shire boundary.  We don’t want them in Noosa Shire.

Fire ants are:

  • copper brown in colour with a darker abdomen
  • quite small at 2–6 mm
  • found in a variety of sizes within the one nest.

Fire ant nests can appear as dome-shaped mounds or be flat and look like a small patch of disturbed soil.

For help with identifying fire ants, see the helpful video and photo gallery on the National Fire Ant Eradication Program website here.
