Peregian Beach Active Street Project

Design & Delivery | 2024–2027

Creating a safer, more connected Peregian Beach

Noosa Council is transforming Lorikeet Drive into an 800m Active Street section that prioritises walking, cycling, and local access. This project will enhance safety, reduce traffic speeds, and improve community connections between Emu Mountain Road and Jabiru Street.

What is an Active Street?

An Active Street is a shared space designed to give priority to cyclists and pedestrians. Features include:

  • Safer footpaths
  • Cyclist-priority zones
  • Reduced speed limits and traffic calming
  • Designated car parking

Safe Active Streets may be new to Noosa, but they’re proven across Australia. Communities in several states are already enjoying safer, calmer and more connected neighbourhoods. Explore the Active Street Case Studies Fact Sheet(PDF, 10MB) to see how this approach is working elsewhere — and what it could mean for Noosa.

Enjoy this short video from Western Australia, which illustrates how Safe Active Streets work in practice, resulting in calmer, safer and more bike- and pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood streets.

Why Lorikeet Drive?

Lorikeet Drive plays a vital role in connecting the Noosa Coastal Pathway to the Sunshine Coast Coastal Pathway. Once complete, the upgrade will:

  • Close a key gap in the Coastal Pathway network
  • Improve access to schools, beaches, homes and parks
  • Offer a safer, quieter alternative to David Low Way
  • Support the Noosa Cycling and Walking Strategy (2020–2040) and the Noosa Liveability Study (2022)
