Centenary of WWI Armistice to be commemorated with community event

Noosa Council will commemorate the centenary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I with a ‘Looking Forward to Peace’ community event in Tewantin Memorial Park on Sunday 11 November 2018.

The event will also reflect on subsequent world conflicts and the ongoing efforts to achieve world peace.

"When news of the signing of the Armistice reached Australia, communities nationwide took to the streets to rejoice the end of four long years of conflict and worry," said Noosa Library Service Heritage Librarian, Jane Harding.

“In Noosa, the locals chose to celebrate on the river, with boats decked out in patriotic bunting. What better way to commemorate this day than by the community coming together again in the park and on the river?”

The Looking Forward to Peace event will commence after the traditional 11am service held by the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch.

There will be a wide range of activities including entertainment by The Andrews Sisters Tribute, the Noosa Chorale and other local community groups, information and displays from relevant community service groups, a community art installation and a re-enactment of the 1918 peace flotilla on the Noosa River.

The event is being funded through a $20,326.36 Lasting Legacies grant from the Queensland Government’s Anzac Centenary Grants Program as well as through the Noosa Council Heritage Levy.

Anyone interested in being involved or wanting more information should contact Noosa Library Service on (07) 5329 6534.

The project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government and the Noosa Council Heritage Levy.
